Thank you that worked fine. The witnesses are of no help as I see they also witnessed other marriages - possibly the curate and his wife.
Interesting that both give their usual residence as NSW, so they have gone off to Melbourne to get married. I believe his father's occupation is "Commission Agent."
This looks like Robert's birth in NZ:
Moffat, Robert Oliver
Mother: Mary Ann
That would make him 19 when he married, so not surprising that he would say he was 21 as he would otherwise have needed permission from his parents or another consenting adult.
You can purchase a print-out of the birth reg. which will give you parents' birthplaces and the marriage will also give their parents' names https://bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/dataCollected/ -
The marriage was Mary Ann's second:
Mary Ann MISSEN
Mary Ann JONES
I cannot get the actual newspaper page to open, only the text version:
Waikato Times, Volume XI, Issue 897, 23 March 1878, Page 2
MISSEN — JONES — On March 21, at St. Peter's Church, Hamilton (by the Rev. W. Calder). Edwin Missen, of Piako, storekeeper, to Mary Ann, eldest daughter of Thomas Jones, Cambridge, Waikato.
Edwin died in 1882.
There is a person researching this MISSEN family and they have a tree on Ancestry.com. If you don't have access let me know and I will contact them for you. Search for Robert Oliver Moffat. I cannot find it on Ancestry's beta site http://www.mundia.com/au/ but you might like to have a look yourself - it is free to register.
