Hello Ann

If you google "Trove" (NLA- National Library of Australia) which is digital copies of Australian Newspapers.
You can search on the left column by state / Type ? decade etc
Most papers are there to around 1954
Colonial Times Saturday 28/12/1844 , a list of many convicts given a Ticket Of Leave as at December 21 , includes your James Day from the Henry Porcher.
Same paper 26/11/1847 again a list of many Convicts who were pardoned , including your James
Unfortunately you cannot search Tas BMD's like you can in NSW
