We were pleased and surprised a few days ago when there came there came in our mail, a letter from an old friend and former townsman, O.V. AUTEN, who left this vicinity several years ago and is now located in Riley,Kansas. he is far advanced in years but still able to write entertainingly, in spite of the infirmities of age. A portion of the letter as follows.
Riley,Kansas dated August 9, 1916
From O.V. Auten: A few weeks ago there came to my home the familiar old paper, the TOMAH JOURNAL,which was glady read to me by my wife, having received a paralytic stroke injuring my eyesight so much that I am unable to read print. I have been in this condition alsmost 2 years and long and lonesome are the days.
If my life is spared until the eleventh day of August, I shall be eighty-six years old. I left Tomah ten years ago and I know most of my old associates are now gone.
In a few months after leaving Tomah I went to Wichita,Kansas, lived there five and one-half years and got married and went to the little town of Riley. We have three dry goods stores, one drug store, one newspaper, two banks, two hardware stores, one shoe store, one barber shop, three churches and no saloons and there is not a lawyer in the town nor a justice of the peace, but the young men marry the young ladies just the same and live happy.
There will be an ice cream and cake social on the lawn at the home of O.V. Auten to assist hime in celebrating his eighty-sixth birthday. We expect good order as the city marshal lives close by and the city is lighted by electricity. Nothing stronger than lemonade will be allowed on the grounds, mind that.
With best regards to all my friends in Tomah.
Yours truly. O.V. AUTEN
(Note letter appeared in The Tomah Journal August 8, 1916)
Tomah is located in Monroe County,WI ---I know this is not a lot of information does give locations and dates...letter is very interesting. (Not related) Hope this will help an Auten reseacher. ann
