Hi Karen,

The Canadian site is You click on the years you want (1901 seems to be the best so far...) then you click onto the Province. Apparently there are additional links to Library & Archives Canada where you can get more on any hit, but I haven't found out how todo that yet, nor have I broken into the vital statistics side... lots more to be done.

Now, as for our Canadian line, my great grandfather (James Thatcher Auten b 1849 in Carroll, Ohio) moved with his wife (Laura Alice Hall) to Alberta in about 1903. There was some to-ing and fro-ing while they checked out the land, but 1903 is about right, so they should have been in Nebraska for the 1900 census.

I don't have any census information about any of the family, but I'm sure they were in Nebraska for the 1880 census as well. Our gggrandfather (James Wesley Auten b 1809 in Washinton, Pennsylvania) came West by wagon train in about 1871. The whole family consisted of his wife (Elinor Nancy Davis b 1818 Washington Pennsylvania), family from a first marriage (5 Dayhuff children ?) and the children from the 2nd marriage (8 children). They rode with other Civil War veterans (so the story goes) and settled in North Bend, Nebraska. My ggrandparents were married in Saunders, Nebraska in 1876.

So, I know the information is correct from 1900 on; I presume it is all correct from 1870 on because there were living relatives up until a couple of years ago who could confirm the move to Nebraska.

The leap of faith begins as we go back from James Wesley Auten, (and, we even have a photograph of the old gent!). We have accepted the information that his parents were John W. Auten and Mary Miller. The dates and places are right and its probably so... I'm not sure how it can be proved.

I got the lead on JW's parents being John J. Aten/Auten and Jane Morden from Lisa Jackson via Pamela Service through the Auten Family Forum. Again, I realize we all get carried away from time to time, but the dates and places work.

John J.'s parents were Hendrick M. Aten and Mary L. Bellas; then we go back to Adriaen Aten and Jacobje Middagh in Flatbush; Thomas Aten and Elsje Schillman; and finally to Adriaen Hendrickse himself.

The only reason we looked for the connections back was that one of my cousins had participated in the DNA testing in 2002, and the match was confirmed.... It would be wonderful to be able to make the connections back through time with some confidence, so I hope you'll be able at some point to give us a little more information!

Regarding Hendrick being 'adopted', that came up on one of the many family web pages. I've asked for clarification - it will be interesting to hear the story if I get a reply. In the mean time I will have a search through Mamie's work.

Looking forward to more contact/information. nancy
