Dear Lois,

I'm delighted to hear from you. I hope this may be the beginning of some exciting research that will answer a few of the mass of outstanding questions that dot the Auten Tree.

I would like to correspond with you directly, so here is my email address: nanvose@hotmail.com

When we communicate directly I'll fill you in on as much information as I can. In the meantime, let me just give you a quick overview.

The documents we need to look at were deposited in the Fort Wayne Library a few years ago by the family of Daniel Sylvester Comp. He was one of the first to do some serious Auten research, but died before he was able to finish his work.

Because Daniel worked before computers were in common use, I have no idea what the 'papers' consist of... there may be a pile of scraps of paper with scribbles on them, or there may be well organized documents; the material may all relate to recent history or it may reach back in time... we just don't know - BUT REALLY WANT to know! I can only imagine that a researcher (you - I hope) will look at the material and be able to organize it, determine what families are included, and decide (with help from the others doing research in other areas) how to best make the material available to other Autens.

Since you are on the Genealogy Forum you probably know a bit about the lines of research being followed. These are tracking all the Auten family lines from the original family in New Amsterdam and are currently doing painstaking work on census and original documents. The focus now is on the line in your part of America (I currently live in France, but my 'orphan' Auten family is in Alberta, Canada) so I believe there will be keen interest in your line and how it fits into the work already done. Daniel's papers may actually shed light on your own people (or they may not! - but other researchers will undoubtedly recognize the line).

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

cheers, nancy
