When I was in London in May 2001, I did some research at the Guild Hall and found some interesting leads in tracing back Anthony Aviolet(b.1737)'s line, in the Parish registers, 1556-1934 Church of England. St. Andrew's Church (Holborn, Middlesex) (these are also in the IGI). The Aviolet name in three of Anthony and Elizabeth's children's baptismal records is recorded as Violett or Violet. This could of course be that Aviolet, being strange in English, was mistakenly recorded as Violet. Following up on this, I discovered a marriage record for Anthony Violet and Sarah Hider, 30 October 1732 in Parish registers, 1685-1881 Church of England. St. James' Church (Westminster)(in IGI)who could be the parents of Anthony b. 1737. Perhaps the original name was Violett, but why it would have been changed to Aviolet is hard to imagine. Perhaps reverting to an earlier form. In the Huguenot records of families emigrating to England, there is no record of the name Aviolet, but there is Violett, Vyolett, Violet, so perhaps that is where we should concentrate our research. I am hoping to return to London sometime soon (I retire in early 2004) and do some more research at the Guild Hall and elsewhere.
It may interest you to know that I have made some progress on the Jarvis/Ross/Dredge line, thanks in large part to another distant cousin descended from the Ross/Dredge line.
