Aydt (Aid) of Alsace, Ohio, St. Louis, & Tryon NC
Francis Anton Aydt (1817-1880) was born at Illhausen, Alsace and immigrated to Chillicothe, Ohio. His son Francis Anton Aid (1842-1914)lived in Quincy, Illinois and moved circa 1880 to St. Louis, Missouri.Son George C. Aid (1872-1938) born in Quincy, attended the St. Louis art academy and studied in Paris, becoming a successful European painter & printmaker. In 1914 he returned to the USA and became a well known artist in the artists' colony of Tryon, North Carolina, in the mountains near Asheville. An exhibition of the art of George Aid opens October 13, 2002 at Tryon Fine Arts Center.Aydt (Aid) relatives and all people interested in fine art are urged to attend. The first publication with a biography of artist George Aid may be found at www.condar.com/press -- the new book TRYON ARTISTS 1892-1942. There will be a publication about Aid for the show, and we would like to obtain a photograph of the ancestral Aydt house in Illhausen, Alsace, France as well as any 19th century images of how that town appeared.
