I have always spelled my last name Baack, but after talking to some relatives, I have discovered that my grandfather had added the "C" himself. He was born in Lehe, Germany and stowed away on a ship heading for USA (late 1800s/early 1900s?). He wanted to change his name so he could hideout in USA. This is hearsay but could be accurate. His name was George Peter Baack [AKA George Alexander Baa(c)k]. His parents names were Henry Baa(c)k[d. Oderquart, Germany] and Mary Fastert[d. Krumendeich, Germany]. His parents were killed in WWI in the bombing of Germany. I think his sister was nicknamed Betty [real name Elizabeth(?)] and a brother named Hugo who died in California, USA. If anyone can help me with any info on my family, please respond to this message. Thank you, Nikki Baack-Brooks.
