i have married into the name Babb and have researched the surname on this side of the 'pond'. the name Babb in my husband's family originates from a bastardisation of the word 'badwr' a welsh word for boatman in the 13th centuary. The family were traders between the Swansea to Pembroke coastal area and the Irish coast. there was a considerable amount of intermarriage between the Welsh and Irish trading families from then until now. a ot of the families left during the potatoe blight famine to America, Africa and Austrailia so this could be where you red headed ansestors came from.
