Does anyone here have detailed information on the later life of Lysander W. Babbitt, who is best known as the editor of "The Bugle" newspaper at Council Bluffs, Iowa, circa 1850 & later, and as a state legislator? He was born in Ovid, Seneca County, New York, Jan 31, 1812. He served an apprenticeship to the gunsmith's trade in Lockport, New York, and briefly had a shop in Cleveland, Ohio, before going west. He arrived in Flint Hills (now Burlington) Iowa, in 1836. He made and repaired rifles in several Iowa locations. These include Burlington, Muscatine, Knoxville, and perhaps Council Bluffs, prior to becoming involved in other pursuits. He probably did not make many (if any) guns after about 1850. He was a true frontiersman and adventurer in the early part of his life.
I am not related to L W Babbitt. I am instead a collector of early guns, and historian of early gunmakers in the Upper Midwest. I own a fine old rifle made by him and stamped, "L W BABBITT". I am very sure this rifle was made in Iowa.
