Parents of SILAS BABCOCK :
DAVID BABCOCK b. 1756 in Stonington, New London, Conn. He married his wife THANKFUL ‘unknown’ , b4 1785, in Stephentown, Renssealer Co., N.Y. before
emigrating to Canada (Kingston & Ernestown) abt. 1793.
(wife's maiden name not known)
David Babcock , the emigrant settler, first appears in the records of Kingston, Upper Canada, 4 December, 1793 in a petition: "being firmly attached to the British Government & Constitution has come to this District where he humbly prays that the same portion of land may be assigned him as hath been usually granted other subjects of his Description".
On 8 August 1798 he memorialized the government: "David Babcock of Ernestown having obtained a certificate from the land Board at Kingston for 200 acres of Land which has never been assigned humbly prays that quantity may be now ordered him."
Thankful and David Babcock had 5 sons, --
Eli b.1790 , William ("Bill")b.1791, Silas b.1793, Henry b.1794, Zeba ("Zebe") b. 1797
Thankful and David Babcock had 3 daughters, --
Phebe b. 17 Nov, 1785 in Vermont , Rebecca b. 1787 NY , Thankful b. 1789 NY .
David Babcock of Ernestown had children named Phebe, Rebecca, William, Silas,Henry, Eli , Zeba and Thankful.
These 8 children are listed in the deposition of receipt of a share of the 50 acres divided in David Babcock of Ernestown's will. His son in law, Ely Peters, was appointed Executor. This information comes from a quit claim deed found in the papers of Eli Peters, who was the executor of the will and married Phebe Babcock,
d/o David Babcock of Ernestown, Ontario.
All 8 children signed the quit claim stating they received their share of 50 acres as per the will.
David Babcock was an emigrant settler, of Stonington CT., and none of his eight children applied for a Crown Grant as son or daughter of a Loyalist.
None of the children of David Babcock , nor his wife ever received land grants as Loyalists.
(Zeba's wife, Sarah (Snider) Babcock received 200 acres as daughter of Loyalist John Jost Snider; so you know that David of Ernestown's children were aware of the availability of the grant).
David's last will and testament dated Nov 6, 1812 at Ernestown,Ontario.
It is presumed that David died 1812.
The names of all 8 of David Babcock's children and his wife, Thankful, are found in his will.
David's will was very specific for his wife, Thankful, leaving for her , the household effects and farm animals, tools etc for use until her death. The will was also very specific regarding equal shares in his property to each of his children. All of his children received equal shares of 50 acres of land. David's will was certified by Isaac Fraser, Deputy Registrar of County of Addington,
in Midland District of Upper Canada.
Witnesses of the will of "NON-UEL" David Babcock were:
Mercy Babcock (wife of UEL Captain David Babcock),
UEL Benjamin Babcock of Ernestown Twp (brother of Captain David Babcock), and Parker Smith (brother-in-law of Captain David Babcock). David Babcock's will ,dated Nov 6, 1812 was registered 30 December, 1828 which must be when his wife, Thankful died. The household effects then went to David's daughter, Thankful, whom we assume was the youngest child. When the estate was settled, Mercy (widow of Captain David Babcock), at this time signed as Mercy Norman (her 2nd marriage name)..

David Babcock's 3 daughters all married in Kingston, Ontario.
