Eleanor, it sounds as if it is the same David but I am not sure. I would dearly love to be able to find more information about same David and the other David's who appear to be about the same age who were in L & A County, Ontario.

A very long time ago when I was working on some other Babcock families in L & A County, I did find that death registration as well and wondered the same thing- was David working for the prison or was he an inmate?

I had written to Linda Corupe at that time who does a lot of work with L & A County families (and Frontenac and Hastings and Prince Edward Counties as well)and she sent me this information- I wrote to Linda yesterday to get her permission to copy this from her old email to me:

"I have a photocopy of the Napanee jail register that is at the Archives of Ontario. David Babcock was committed on Nov. 30, 1886 for vagrancy. His age in that register is 76, and he is shown as a Presbyterian labourer from Ernestown. He was recommitted on March 31, 1887 and again on Apr. 30, 1887, again for vagrancy. Obviously he had no place to go. He was 77 at that point. Beside this last entry, is the notation 'died'."

I found David Babcock and his second wife Jane Peters on the 1851 census of Ernestown with four children- 3 from the first marriage including your Katherine age 8 years born at Ernestown, and a son Alexander who is Jane's son.

I cannot find them on a census after that- does anyone have them in 1861, 1871, and 1881? Does anyone know where and when Jane Peters Babcock died? Why would David Babcock be charged with vagrancy and have no place to live except the town jail if he had such a big family- that is the part I don't understand...??? Did Jane Peters leave her husband and take her children and move away?

Ava Richer has posted these names as the children of same David Babcock and his wife Jane Peters:

Alexander born 1849
Stephen born 1854
Jacob born 1856
Priscilla or Percilla born 1858
Augustus born 1860
Agnes born 1862
Drucilla born 1865
Hester born 1867 and
William born 1870

Ava stated that there could be others, but she is not sure.

From first marriage there were:

POSSIBLY Joseph born 1836 (but why such a huge gap here?)
Katherine born 1844
Lovina born 1846

Also, many people record this specific David Babcock in Ernestown as being the son of Benjamin Babcock and Rachel Decker- who DID have a son David as per old documents. However, their son was born about 1792, again, per those old documents. The David we are discussing here was age 43 in 1851 which puts his approximate yob at 1808, and that is consistent with other records for same David. I can see a 2-5 year discrepancy in his age but not a gap of 16 years, so I do NOT think this is the same David Babcock.

There is a record of a David Babcock in Ernestown marrying a Mary Polly Tryon in 1815- I think THAT David was the son of Benjamin Babcock and Rachel Decker, but what hap. to him and Polly? Whose son was 1808 David Babcock who died on May 20 1887 in the prison yard?

If anyone has more info on this family would love to hear from you. Eleanor, did you say your ancestor Catherine from this family lived in Michigan?

Nora
