Leanne,

I do have a William Babers, son of John Babers, Jr., born about 1859 in Louisiana. I did not estimate this birth year and I don't know what it is based on. Most of this family was found in the 1870 Census and birth years were estimated from it. William was not. John married Louisa Weathersby in 1/1851, children were born in 1853, 1854, 1857, 1864. Leaving plenty of years William could have been born.

He had a brother George and 4 sisters. In 1889, George was a resident of New Mexico and William's whereabouts were unknown. John was in Louisiana in the 1870 Census and died in TX between then and 1889. I can place George in Louisiana in 1870, 1883, 1886 and he died in LA in 1898. Which means he went to New Mexico and returned.

The name Melton does not ring any bells, but John, Jr. had a brother James "Pinckney" Babers.

Since the Chisolm trail ran from south of San Antonio, TX north to Abilene, KS, is it possible your William lived in TX and later moved to NM. Use of the Chisolm trail began in 1867 and lasted about 20 years. Do you know when your picture was taken or how old your William was?

There was a W. H. Babers who married a Dickey McCarty 6/11/1881 in Bosque, TX. I don't know who this Babers is, but in 1889 Warcipa Babers Simmons, sister of William and George lived in Bosque Co.. If the Chisolm trail went due north, Bosque Co. TX would have been on the way.

Don't know if anything here will help. My GrGrGrandfather was brother to John, Jr., I have the ancestry but not too much on the side branches.
