Baber/Pettis Connection: So. IL, 1874

My Great-Uncle, born 1874 in Fayette Co., IL, was named John Baber Pettis. With Baber as a middle name, it was always assumed that the Pettis family had some close connection, perhaps a marriage with the Babers. The Pettis families had come from Baltimore if that helps, but settled for the years 1865-1900 or more in Southern IL. Can anyone put this connection together? Thanks for your help.
