Chuck, I share your frustration. I've done an awful lot of legwork, undoubtedly in the same courthouses, and the amount of misinformation on the internet is terrible.

Re Robert Baber b. about 1651: Member of the Church of England, because the birth of his son, Edward, is recorded in the Charles Parish Register as follows: "Edward Baber, son of Robert by Sarah born October 12, 1682". (p 45). I have found no information re Sarah's maiden name. I 's say that we could infer that Robert, son of Robert, was born in the 1680s.

Re Robert Baber b. about 1684: Will 1747: "Item. I give and bequeath unto the child my beloved wife Margarie {Margaret} Baber is now pregnant with the sum of thirty pounds current money of Virginia to be paid to it upon its arrival of one and twenty years." While I suspect Margaret's maiden name was Welch, I have found no proof.

Re Robert Baber b. about 1725: Will 1786: "Item I give unto my Wife Jane Baber the Plantition I now live on with the Privilage of cutting Timber and fire wood on my Land dureing life or Widowhood." While I suspect Jane's maiden name was Pendleton, I have found no proof.

I have visited the Virginia Historical Society and collected reams of paper, but not yet had a chance to sort through it. When I do, I'll be sure to post. Would you care to share any hunches about the "Robert" wives' maiden names?

Cheers. Nancy
