Babington~Abington?

I have a simple question and would appreciate some feed back on the subject. I have searched for my g'g'grandfather Thomas Abington b. abt. 1801 in Galway, or County Galway, Ireland with no results. Family rumor has it that Thomas had such a thick Irish accent he was hard to understand. I'm wondering that when he came to America in abt. 1824 through New York immigration might have misunderstood him. Have any of you faced this problem? Does anyone (crossing fingers) have a Thomas Babington in the family?
Thanks,
Joan
