15th Annual Back/Bach Genealogical Society meeting
Announcing the 15th annual meeting of the Back/Bach Genealogy Society.
Some of you may not be familiar with the Back/Bach Genealogy Society. The Society is a not for profit organization dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the Back/Bach family. It was established in the early 1990’s for the purpose of combining the genealogical research of many individuals.
The meeting will be held in Whitesburg Kentucky October 10 and 11.
Friday, October 10th
This fifteenth annual meeting will begin at 9 a.m. with a tour across Pine Mountain. The van will make a stop at Valley of the Winds, a gallery of original artwork by Jeff and Sharman Chapman Crane. Jeff does realistic paintings of mountain people and places. Sharman does representative sculptural images of endangered animals and habitats. They are only open mornings so it is important you go there first. You will visit the Oven Fork Mercantile store which offers a variety of unusual items for sale. You will visit the cemetery where Elizabeth Hoffman Back (wife of Henry, Jr.) is buried. She is the grandmother (with a few greats added) of many of this group, including me. Family members purchased her a headstone some years back. This grave is on a hillside with a climb involved so you might wear old comfortable walking shoes. Your cost of this tour will be $10.00 per person. The van or vans, will depart from Parkway Motel at 9 a.m. and will stop at Super 8 about 15 minutes later. You need to prepay this tour when you return your registration form. You will have lunch along the way and return to your motel around 2–3 p.m.
The evening meal will be at the WINERY at Seco. The food is outstanding and the atmosphere is homey yet sophisticated. The restaurant is located in an old coal company store building. The menu will be prime rib, salmon and baked chicken. The price is $16.95 including dessert, plus tax and drinks.
I do not need your money for your Friday meal in advance but I do need to know your entree preference. Please indicate your choice on your return coupon. Any of you who have not been to Seco will need directions. We will meet at the Parkway Motel parking lot at 6 PM and go as a group. The Winery's location is a little inconvenient but the experience of dining there will compensate.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11TH
All activities on this day will be held at the Pine Mountain Grill conference room in Whitesburg. The reception desk will open at 10 a.m. Milton and Atlas Back have volunteered to handle registration. As stated in the February newsletter, Minerva Craft has resigned this duty. She filled this function many years and we want to express our appreciation for a job well done.
Coffee and Danish will be served mid-morning and the room will be available for use the entire day for renewing friendships and getting better acquainted.
You are on your own for lunch on Saturday. The food at Courthouse Cafe is extremely good. Parking is scarce but better on Saturday than weekdays. There are a variety of fast food restaurants in the area.
There will be a business meeting at 2 p.m. at the grill followed by a planning session for the purpose of organizing next year’s cemetery restoration project. We will adjourn at the end of this meeting as we must clear the room to allow the restaurant staff to set the tables for our evening meal.
An interesting program is planned for your evening enjoyment. Our speaker will be Stephen Bowling. This will start at 6 p.m. The buffet, which cost $22.00 each, is always good.
The money for the buffet must accompany your registration form. The nights agenda ends with the annual auction. The funds from this event help cover the reunion expenses. So REMEMBER to bring an item to donate. Plus it's fun!!
If interested in attending please let me know and I will send you the registration information.
