According to Betty Lee Gibson, grandaughter of Charles Lee and Sue E. Graves Bailiss, and family researcher, Charles Lee Bailiss was born in VA; son of Addison and Zaniah Bailiss. Some ancestors of Sue E. Graves settled in Hawkins Co., TN; some migrated to Maury Co., TN. Family oral history says that Charles rode with John S. Mosby's rangers during the Civil War and that he was present in Ford's Theatre when President Lincoln was shot, a curious coincidence, if true. To say that information on Charles and ancestors prior to Reconstruction is scarce would be a great understatement. Rufus Lee Bailess, my great grandfather, is son of Charles Lee and Emily Graves Bailiss. Emily was the first wife of Charles and older sister of Sue E. Graves Bailiss. They are all buried in Friendship Baptist Cemetery, Culleoka, TN (Maury Co.).
