Thanks for the reply.

Strangely enough, I am related to 2 lines of Hodgsons.

The Margaret Hodgson, that was married to William Bainbridge - the butcher at Billy Row, was born at Etherley. I would think that there is a possibility it could be the same line that you refer to. In the 1861 census her father, Robert Hodgson is down as retired butcher from Durham. This may mean Durham City, but it could equally mean any where in County Durham.

The other Hodgsons I am related to, on my dad's father's side, are the Hodgsons of Dent, West Riding of Yorkshire (very close to Cumbria), and Ravenstonedale. Dorothy Hodgson married my 8 x great grandfather John Noddle in 1647 in Dent.

Perhaps there is link between the two lines.
