Hi Teresa,
I've been trying to figure out for a while now when my family's name may have changed from "Baize" to "Baze."My line descends through Doctor Peter Baize's brother Jefferson P. Baze (Sr.).If you have a document signed by Doctor Baize clearly showing his last name spelled as "Baize" then that would seem to make it more likely than not that my Jefferson P. Baze (Sr.) was actually born a "Baize" as well, since Jefferson was born a few years before Doctor. And while I can see someone removing the "i" from "Baize" for possible spelling/pronounciation ease, I can't see adding an "i" to "Baze."(Jefferson's son, Jefferson P. Baze, Jr., my great-great-grandfather, seems to have always been a "Baze.")
The above would seem to indicate that their father, Abednego, probably actually had the last name of "Baize" as well.Someone posted the content of a marriage consent between Abednego Baize / Baze / Baise and Mary Shultz / Shoults in which it's stated that the consent apparently actually spelled the name as "Baize."The consent reads as follows:
"BAISE, Abednego and Mary SHOULTS, dau of David
Shoults/Shults who gave consent. Abednego son of
Hannah Walker, late Baise, who married David Walker,
consent spells name as Baize.
Attest Jessie Roberson. Married 20 Jan 1806 by
Henry Winfrey"
Do you have any additional evidence that Abednego's real last name was "Baize," or any information about the name changes that apparently occurred with some of his children/descendants?This is somewhat more of an important matter now that a cancer-causing genetic defect has been found at at least the level of Jefferson P. Baze, Sr. and his wife, Delilah Julian (please see my posting on the Baze forum for more information).
Thanks very much,
Mark
