Death of C.I. Balch, at Kalamazoo, Michigan
Confucius I. Balch passed away at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at his home in Kalamazoo, Mich. Mr. Balch suffered a third stoke of apoplexy on the morning of january 29, and has been gradually failing since. Had he lived until March 26th he would have been 75 years of age. He leaves a wife, two daughter, Miss Emily A. Balch of Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Charles A. Pierce of Elgin, and four sons, H.B. and Louis N. of Chicago, George R. of Cincinnati and Charles F., a traveling salesman, and one brother, Arad C., of Kalamazoo.
He went to Michigan when about 21 years of age and soon after came to Illinois. From there he went to California during the gold fever, where he remained two yeas. On his return he located at St. Charles, where he married Miss Caroline A. Ryther, who survives him. In 1865 he went to Kalamazoo with his family, where he had continued to reside until his death.
While not engaged in any active work for many years because of failing health, he will be missed by a large circle of acquaintances.
