Just thought I would mention to all you Balcombes out there that Betsy Balcombe's memoirs have just been published in the UK as TO BEFRIEND AN EMPEROR: betsy balcombe's memoirs of Napoleon on St Helena (Ravenhall Books, www.ravenhallbooks.com).
It is a great story and has a vast amount on the life of the Balcombe family on St Helena between 1815 and 1818 when they left and, shortly afterwards, went to Australia. There are family portraits in the book too.
Betsy and her sister take pride of place, although the parents also feature heavily.
