Your John Bale may be related to my ancestor, George Bale. George was born 1798 and died in 1880 at South Molton, Devon. He was married to Mary Boyles (1795-1881) at South Molton. Their daughter Martha, born 1828 at Filleigh, married William Youatt and immigrated to America in 1882. Prior to immigration, Youatt was a stonecutter/mason at Castle Hill, living at Swimbridge and Filleigh. Possible sibling to Martha is Henry Bale, a gardener by occupation who appeared in the 1881 British Census as follows:
Henry BALE Head M Male 64 Swimbridge, Devon, England Gardener
Mary BALE Wife M Female 64 Barnstaple, Devon, England Gardeners Wife
Henry BALE Son U Male 38 Bishops Tawton, Devon, England Waterman 6/3
George BALE Son U Male 27 Barnstaple, Devon, England Master Painter Employing 1 Apprentice
Mary Ann BALE Daur U Female 23 Barnstaple, Devon, England Gardeners Daughter
Agnes BALE Daur W Female 39 Brendon, Devon, England Seamstress
William Henry BALE Son U Male 10 Barnstaple, Devon, England Scholar
Samuel BALE Son Male 7 Barnstaple, Devon, England Scholar

These Barnstaple Bales must be related so if anyone can add to this, it would be appreciated.
