The 1871 British Census found Robert (30) employed as a labourer and living in Lytchett Minister on Poole Road with his wife Caroline (30) and their children Louisa (9), Walter (7), Flora (5), Robert (2) and William (2 mos.). His neighbour on Poole Road, Frederick Ballam (30), may have been his twin brother or a cousin.
Robert and his family emigrated to Ontario in 1873 and lived at Ingersol, Bayham and Bracebridge while Robert looked for steady work in logging, mining, road building, fishing or farming. In 1886 his oldest daughter Louisa married and moved to Chilliwack, BC.In 1887 he travelled to Chilliwack and found workon a Gibson Road farm. He sent for his family in 1888 and Caroline travelled to BC with Robert (19), William (17) ,Susan(14) and Harry (12). Walter remained in Ontario and married Emma Whelpton whose family can be traced back to seventeenth century England.
The 1901 Canadian Census found Robert (61) farming in Chilliwack with his wife Caroline (61) and their children Susan (27) and Harry (25).
