I searched a number of ways to find your Emery Ballinger/Ballenger in the 1870 census, but apparently he's not listed as Emery or Emory or even as E, that is, there were no young boys by that name with any last name like Ballenger.
I did find Emery's listing in the 1910 census in Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana. This is from microfilm T624, Roll 352, p.43:
Emery L. 43
wife Sadie E. 25
son Theodore 9
son Roy 7
dau Flossie 4
At the time, the couple had been married 10 years, and Sadie had only had three children total, obviously all alive. They were all born in Indiana, and Emery worked as a foreman on the railroad. If you say that he was first married in 1882, his age here (b. 1866/67) seems a bit off.
I hope this helps.
