Can someone please do a lookup in the book THREE CENTURIES OF BALLINGERS
IN AMERICA by Emma Barrett Reeves and tell me whom she identifies as the children of
Thomas and Elizabeth (Elkinton) Ballenger and what sources she cites? Thomas Ballenger
was born 1685 and was a son of Henry and Mary (Harding) Ballenger. He died intestate
and on 14 Aug 1739 Letters of Administation for the estate of Thomas Ballenger of
Evesham, Burlington Co. NJ were granted to Elizabeth Ballenger. 30 NJA 1st 34
Also, can someone do a lookup in the Haddonfield NJ Monthly Meeting Records to see
what information they contain about the 1733 marriage of Thomas Garwood to Mary
I’m a descendant of Thomas Garwood and Mary Ballinger who, according to Haddonfield
NJ Friend’s Meeting records were married in 1733. They later removed to the Great Egg
Harbor region in what is now Atlantic County, NJ. Mary (Ballinger) Garwood was a
Minister among the Friends and she died 6 Apr. 1764.
According to the Genealogy of the Lake Family, by Dr. Arthur Adams and Sara Risley
(1915), Mary Ballinger was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Elkinton) Ballinger.
Arthur Adams again identifies the parents of Mary Ballinger as Thomas and Elizabeth
(Elkinton) Ballinger in his book "The Elkinton Family in England and America" (1945).
No sources are given in either the Lake or the Elkinton book that support this
identification of the parents of Mary Ballinger.
Dr. Arthur Adams was the President of the “Order of the Crown of Charlemagne” from
1946-1960. www.charlemagne.org To become a member of the “Order of the Crown of
Charlemagne”, one must prove “prove beyond doubt their descent from the Emperor
Charlemagne”. http://tinyurl.com/555xh It is my understanding that Arthur Adams’
membership in the Order of Charlemagne was based on his descent from Elizabeth
(Elkinton) Ballinger thorough her purported daughter Mary (Ballinger) Garwood. It also
appears, however, that Dr. Adams identified Mary (Ballinger) Garwood’s parents as
Thomas and Elizabeth (Elkinton) Ballinger in the 1915 Lake Genealogy before he had
learned of the Elkinton family’s relationship to English royalty (which he details in his
1945 Elkinton book).
Recently I obtained a copy of a Ballenger Family Genealogy that was published in the
Quaker Yeoman, vol. 2, no. 4 (1976). (I don’t know who the author of the article is). That
genealogy does not include a daughter Mary among the children of Thomas and Elizabeth
(Elkinton) Ballenger, and doesn’t identify the sources for the children that are listed there.
To complicate things further, I came across a post at http://tinyurl.com/3j87r which says
that my Thomas Garwood married Mary Ballenger, widow of John Ballenger, and
daughter of Richard Ridgway and Abigail Stockton. Since Mary Ridgway married John
Ballenger in 1718, and the Mary Ballenger who married Thomas Garwood in 1733 gave
birth to a child in 1747/8, I doubt they are the same Mary Ballenger.
Can anyone help me sort this out?
