Yes, I'm sure you are right. I've seen Chalmers' brother John on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Georgia. Those particular censuses took me a long time to find -- one of them is missing the surname and the father, Allen.

I've recently made progress backward a couple of generations by working with another Ballenger researcher. We now believe that Allen and Joseph T. were brothers, and that their parents are Peter and Sarah who lived in Franklin and DeKalb Cos. in GA. Peter's father is John Sr. who was the first Ballenger in GA and lived in Elbert Co.
