It wasn't necessarily the father who attested to age.In this case, from the Personal Property Tax Lists, it appears that Richard may have been Harrison's brother.Both of them during the later 1830's and 1840's were often residing in the household of someone else. There is also a Horatio, a Troy, and a John Ballenger who are living with others during that period.It is possible that they were all brothers working and living with others.

Died: At his residence of Circleville in this county, on Saturday, the 23d inst., of typhoid fever, Mr. Troy BALLENGER, in 36th year of his age.
Note that Troy was not listed in the Loudoun Co. Death Register, which might have given a clue as to his parents.
