Amariah Ballou
I recently borrowed the book by adin ballou from my local library who got it on loan from another library.I found all the missing pieces that I have been looking for.This was my 4th great grandfather,it is an interesting and sad story.
Amariah Ballou
Amariah Ballou was born in Cumberland RI February 14th, 1771.He married Jane Lothridge and they had six children and several that died in infancy.Amariah was a House Carpenter and seems to have wandered away from his native place, probably in pursuit of better fortune but experienced sad misfortune, especially at the end of his career.Having married in Pelham Massachusetts and pursued his calling for several years in the towns of that general vicinity, he removed with his family in 1815 to Ebensburg, Cambria County, Pennsylvania and settled on a homestead, still following his carpenters trade as opportunity offered inducement.Meantime three of his children married and began to raise families, but his second son, Levi, in 1862 set out to make a visit to RI, via New Orleans died of Cholera while going down the Mississippi River and left no trace of particulars.Next in 1840, his son Nelson was fatally injured or killed outright by rolling logs near Portage Railroad depot.He left a young widow and two children.His widow died a year later and the two orphans were taken by their Grandparents to live with them.Next and finally, their dwelling house took fire one night in 1843, where Amariah, his wife Jane, and the two orphan grandchildren, all perished in the flames.Silas barely escaping with his life.Nearly all the household good, including the Family Bible and its records were consumed.Thus closed the mortal lives of Amariah Ballou and his wife, he being in his 73rd year and she
