Hi David,

Picked up on your posting regarding William Eddy BANFIELD. I have a massive amount of information on him which I would be willing to share with you. His parents were William BANFIELD & Ann (nee' NICHOLLS)and his grandmother was an EDDY. His original trade was shipwright, he sailed on the HMS Constance in 1846 on its maiden, and shake down, voyage to Vancouver. On discharge in December 1849 he made at least one attempt at getting back into Canada and in the early 1850's succeeded and moved to Vancouver Island. He was, among other things, a Government Agent, liaising between the indigenous Indians and fighting for their rights. He was not a fan of the Hudson Bay Company! There are numerous letters, written to the Governor, in the Canadian archives. He was reportedly murdered on 22 October 1862 by an Indian drowning him from a canoe that they were travelling in. His executor, on his death, made off with his money. And another person allegedly plagurised his written works regarding the Indians. He gave his name to Bamfield [corrupted his name!], although I believe the lifeboat there is correctly named.

My file on him is in MS Word format and, due to some scannings, has a file size of about 35Mb which is rather large to transmit by e-mail.

If there are any areas that you would like information on, please let me know.

Roger Banfield
