Article, "Charles Elda Banker" from A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans (1918):

Charles Elda Banker, city clerk of Salina, has been a resident of Saline County forty years, and his family is one of the best known in this section of the state.
His father was the late John A. Banker, who was especially well known for his services as a landscape gardener in Saline County, and also had the distinction of establishing the first nursery in the county. John A. Banker was born near Germantown, Ohio, December 25, 1848. He followed farming for many years in Ohio, subsequently became a merchant at Germantown, but in 1877 brought his family to Kansas and bought a tract of raw land in Saline County five miles northwest of Salina. That land he developed largely as a nursery, and this nursery supplied the stock for many of the earliest orchards planted in this and surrounding counties. He also established a general sore at the station on the Union Pacific Railway known as Trenton, and for a few years he served as station agent. He finally retired from active business in 1892 and spent his last years in Salina. As a landscape gardener he designed many of the most beautiful properties in that city and his services were greatly in demand throughout this section of the state. He served as part commissioner of Saline County for four years, and while in that office he laid out the beautiful Oakdale Park in Salina. He was a stanch supporter of the republican party and filled several minor offices in Kansas. He was both a member and official in the United Brethren Church. The death of this honored citizen occurred at Salina, September 12, 1908.
On December 22, 1868, John A. Banker married Miss Susan McLain, who was born near Germantown, Ohio, August 9, 1847. They became the parents of eight children, five sons and three daughters: Charles Elda; Courtney, who died in infancy; Christopher Wilber, who is now a farmer at Center, Colorado; Iva M., who was married in 1915 to George Kerns and they live in Salina; Victor A., a contractor at Minneapolis, Minnesota; Myrtle E., who was married in 1904 to Amos Barth of Salina; Lizzie H., who in 1908 became the wife of William Kerns of Salina; Frank, a farmer and automobile dealer at Fellsmere, Florida.

Notes for Susanna McLain:
Newspaper story, Salina Journal, Friday, 2/19/1926:

Mrs. Susanna Banker, 78, a resident of Salina for the past 49 years and well known here as among the early day settlers, died this morning at 4:25 at Asbury hospital, where she was taken Monday following a stroke of paralysis which she suffered Saturday afternoon at her residence, 513 Park street. Alone at the time she was stricken, the aged woman lay alone on the kitchen floor throughout Saturday night and until nearly noon on Sunday when Mrs. William Kearns, a daughter, made her daily trip to the mother's home.
Insistent upon maintaining her own home, Mrs. Banker has been visited every day at some time by her daughter and Charles Banker, city clerk, her son. It happened that on the day she suffered her final ailment no one called during the evening. She had just been bringing in coal for the night fires. When she was found the following noon the house was cold and mrs. Banker frightfully chilled in addition to being paralyzed. She was taken to the hospital on Monday, at times apparently recognizing members of the family and again lapsing into a state of coma. Her condition, from the first, was regarded as critical, and sons and daughters living at a distance were summoned.
Mrs. George Kearns, Oklahoma City, arrived Monday noon. Wilbur Banker, San Gabriel Calif., just recovering from an automobile accident in which he was badly injured, left his home Monday and arrived in Salina yesterday on a delayed train from the west. Frank Banker, Vero Beach, Fla., had arrived before his mother's death, also, making the entire family circle complete with the exception of one son, Victor Banker, also of Vero Beach, Fla., who was unable to make the trip. With Mrs. William Kearns, Salina, Mrs. Amos Barth, Salina and Charles Banker, the sons and daughters number seven. Mrs. Banker herself was one of 11 children only three of whom are now living.
Mr. and Mrs. John A. Banker came to Salina March 7, 1877 and the family home as been here since that time. Mr. Banker died several years ago.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2?30 at the United Brethren church with Rev. Caldwell, Kansas City, in charge. The body will be at the Salina Funeral home where friends may call until Saturday evening when it will be taken to the little home on park street which Mrs. Banker loved so well. There, friends may call for the last visit through the hours of Sunday and until the funeral on Monday.

Newspaper story, Salina Evening Journal, Thursday, 10/9/1924:

W. E. Banker, 905 West Ash street, suffered a fractured skull when he fell from a corn binder at the farm of his son-in-law, Clarence Garrison, five and one-half miles northwest of Salina, late this afternoon. Mr. Banker, who has been unconscious since the accident, was brought to Asbury hospital and no hopes are entertained for his recovery, the attending physician saying that even an operation would be of no avail. His death is just a matter of a few hours, relatives stated late this afternoon.
The unfortunate accident is a mystery and no one is able to explain what happened to Mr. Banker. Mr. Garrison was working in the field with him and noticed something wrong. Going across the field he found Mr. Banker lying by the binder where he had fallen. One arm was slightly injured where it had caught beneath the machine but the team was standing still. During the excitement of the moment a thorough investigation was not made but it is presumed that the injured man struck his head on some hard object on the ground.

Newspaper story, Salina Evening Journal, Friday, 10/10/1924:

Walter E. Banker, 905 West Ash street, found fatally injured yesterday afternoon in a field near his old hiome northwest of Salina, was the victim of a shot fired by his son-in-law, Clarence Garrison, it is thought, according to the statement made today by the coroner, Dr. C. M. Fitzpatrick, and Dr. J.E. Lutz, physician who attended the injured man. Mr. Garrison, officers declared today, took three shots at a rabbit, he says. One of the shots, it is thought, must have deflected and struck Mr. Banker, who died at 4 oclock yesterday afternoon as a result of his injury. he was unconscious from the time of the accident until his death.
Mr. Garrison, according to officers, was working in the same field with his father-in-law yesterday afternoon. With Herbert Homolka, a neighbor, he was shocking corn when the two sighted a rabbit, officers quote him as saying. he fired three times at the animal and then he and Mr. Homolka resumed their work. They set up another shock of corn when, glancing up, they noticed that Mr. Banker's binder had stopped, and he was lopped far over the side of the machine. They went to him to find that he was unconscious. The thought that he had been shot did not occur to either of the men at the time, officers say Mr. Garrison stated.
When the physician arrived, the coroner said today, he found in examining Mr. Banker that there was a hole in the base of the brain, and gave the decision that something had penetrated the skull. For a time it was thought that the injured man had struck on the machine after falling. What could have caused him to fall was not known.
At the hospital in Salina, however, to which Mr. Banker was rushed at once, the fragment of the bullet was found by the physician. it confirmed the fear that Mr. Garrison and Mr. Homolka had expressed at the scene of the accident when the physician first examined the wounded man, that one of the bullets had in some way strayed or deflected in such a way as to strike him instead of the rabbit.
The friendliest of feeling has always existed between the son-in-law, Mr. Garrison, and Mr. Banker, members of the family and attending physicians stated today. The tragic culmination to the acident of yesterday presents a new grief for the entire family. A coroner's inquest is to be called for Monday afternoon, Dr. Fitzpatrick announced today. The jury will be selected this evening.
O.C. Tucker, whose country residence is near that of Clarence Garrison started [sic] today in Salina that a group of youths were hunting in that vicinity yesterday. he heard their shots about eleven oclock and would be able to identify them, he says. That he will do so if any of his property is damagaed was the statement he made in Salina today. he thinks a shot may have struck his wagon, he told friends in this city, and intends to investigate.
"Those hunters would have had time to get down to Banker's working place by the time he was injured," Mr. Tucker said this morning.
Whether this will shed a new night [sic] on mr. Banker's tragic death is not known.
Mr. Banker was 71 years of age and his lived in this city for ten years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Banker and these sons and daughters: Mrs. Della Carney, Mrs. Lottie Garrison, Mrs. Maude Beil, Jasper Banker, Harry Banker, Otis Banker and Claude Banker. Article, "Charles Elda Banker" from A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans (1918):

Charles Elda Banker, city clerk of Salina, has been a resident of Saline County forty years, and his family is one of the best known in this section of the state.

*****
Charles Elda Banker was born in a farm near Germantown, Ohio, February 22, 1870, and was seven years of age when the family came to Kansas. He acquired considerable instruction in the public schools of Salina, but benefited mostly by his training in the school of experience. He grew up on a farm, and at the age of fifteen took charge of his fathers store at Trenton. In 1888 he left home and for one year worked as a printer in a newspaper office at Eureka Springs, Arkansas. That work proved too confining and detrimental to his health and returning to Kansas he then bought his father's store at Trenton. He remained a merchant in that village until 1893, and since then has lived in Salina. In 1898 he entered the employ of the city and held various appointive offices. Since December, 1910, he has been city clerk.

Obit: Salina Journal, Monday, 1/12/1959:

Charles Elda Banker, 88, 255 S. 11th, Salina, city clerk emeritus, died at 7:22 pm Sunday in Asbury Hospital where he had been a patient two months.
Mr. Banker began his career with the city on Jan. 23, 1899, as custodian at the city building. Fifty-four years later a stroke forced him to give up his work.
In the interim he had served as a special police officer, city electrician, supervisor of Salina's first chemical fire engine, acting city manager and, lastly, city clerk, a job he held more than 40 years.
The veteran city official was recognized outside of the city. He was president and vice-president of the Kansas League of Municipalities and was on that organization's board of directors.
One of the innovations introduced by Mr. Banker was when he put in the typewritten record system at the city hall. That was in 1913. In 1914, he designed the loose leaf registration system used for many years in many Kansas cities.
Mr. Banker also inaugurated the custom of issuing a city report in pamphlet form. It was the first in Kansas and was copied in many other cities.
Mr. Banker was instrumental in the establishment of Salina's fire department.
He liked to recall that when he began working for the city, Salina was a town of 6074 population.
Born Feb. 22, 1870 in Germantown, Ohio, Mr. Banker was seven years old when he came to Salina.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Isis Temple Shrine and the Knight commandery Court of Honor of the Scottish Rite, and Salina Lodge No. 60, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
Mr. Banker's first wife, Sylvia, died in 1942. his second wife, Mary A., died in 1955.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Hicks, 817 S. 10th; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Victor A., Excelsior, Minn., and Frank V., Long Beach, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle E. Rose, Alhambra, Calif.

       52. He married Mabel B. Stover382 12 Oct 1904383. She was born 02 Dec 1886 in Kansas384,385, and died 08 Sep 1908 in Shipton, KS386.

Notes for Edwin Leroy Banker:
Newspaper story, Salina Evening Journal, Monday, 8/3/1908:

Edwin L. Banker, a young farmer living northwest of Salina near Trenton, was drowned in the Saline river yesterday afternoon about 3:30 o'clock while attempting to cross the stream. No other person was in the water at the time. Three other men and a boy were on the bank but were unable to save their dying companion.
Banker and three of his neighbors, J. Ford, henry Stolpher and Mart Smith and also a half brother of mr. Ford's a boy about twelve years old, went to the river about 3 o'clock to swim. Arriving at the water the boy went in first and swam across the river and back. Mr. Banker was next. it was thought that he was walking on the bottom, as he was known not to be a good swimmer.
When about one hundred yards down stream he was seen to struggle and those on the bank told him not to go any further as it was too deep. Smith told Ford that he had better go in down that way, as the water was too deep for Banekr. Ford replied that he could not swim. Banker at this moment cried for help, and was seen struggling hard.
Smith plunged into the stream and got within six feet of Banker when the latter went down for the last time. Smith had a stick in his hand which he held out to Banker, but the fingers of the drowining man were too weak to grasp it, although the stick touched them.
Smith was a poor swimmer, while Stopher and Ford could not swim at all. The young boy was a good swimmer and an expert diver. He wanted to go after Banker but the older heads would not permit him to do so for fear taht Banker would pull the light body under the water with him.
The alarm was immediately given and an hour later the body was removed from the water. Dr. Lutz of Salina was called and was on the bank as soon as the body was landed but lifehad long been extinct. The body was then removed to the Banekr home.
It is thought that Banker did not know that the water was deeper further down the stream although mr. Ford called to him that such was the case. As Banker was splashing round in the water it is supposed that he did nothear the warning. The boy also told him not to go down there as he could not touch the bottom when he passed.
At the place where Banker went down there is a deep hole which has a depth that is not known. While he was not a good swimmer, it is known by his friends that he could easily swim across the stream and he had been seen to do so.
The greatest mystery about the incident is why he went down stream instead of across it. it appeared that he allowed himself to half float and half swim down the stream and when he came to the hole where he lost the advantage of his foot hold he became frightened and lost confidence in himself.
A curious fact connected with this accident is that Banker's brother, oscar Banker, who was drowned during the 1903 flood, sank not more than 40 feet upstream from the place where Edwin Banker was last seen yesterday. While he was going down stream yesterday before he got to the deep water he had passed directly over the place where his brother had disappeared.
Banker lived just five miles northwest of Salina and the place in the Saline river where he drowned was about a mile and a half west and north of his residence on the farm of Henry Stolpher.
Mr. Banker leaves a wife to whom he had been married three years, a one-year-old baby girl, a father, W. E. Banker, four brothers and three sisters. he is a nephew of John Banker of Salina and a cousin of Charles Banker, also of Salina.
The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Shilo church and will be conducted by Rev. George Caldwell.

Mrs. Mabel Stover Banker died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Stover near Shipton, at 12:40 o'clock today of general peritinitis. She leaves one small child and many other relatives. Her husband, Edwin Banker, was drowned in the Saline river only a short time ago, ever since which time Mrs. Banker has been sick. She has never recovered from the shock caused by the death of her husband, which was the primary cause of her own death.
An operation was to have been performed on Mrs. Banker some time this afternoon by Salina surgeons as a last chance of saving her life. When the oepration was decided upon it was feared that she was too weak to stand the shock, but her physicians believed it the only hope. Two or three hours before the time for the operation death occurred. The funeral arrangements will be given later.
