Roger:

I don't have any information on your specific family but you might want to do a search of the surname BARD at www.familysearch.org. You will find lots of British (English and Scottish Bard's) as well as Bard people from Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France etc. Seems to be a wide spread name. The earliest English BARD I saw on that site was one Sir Roger Bard, who was married about 1201 at Ongar, Essex.

Since the surname is so wide spread, I suspect it originated in many countries simultaneously. Bard does also seem to be an Old Norse personal name (for example,Bard, kinsman of Svein Asleifarson appears in Orkneyinga Saga and Bard Brynolfsson (the White) and Bard of Atley appear in Egil's Saga). Since there was considerable Viking influence on England, possibly the English Bard surname has Old Norse roots?

My interest in the Bard surname, by the way, is through my wife's great grandmother, Anna Maria Bard, who was born in Sweden in 1875. In her case, the surname was a Swedish soldier surname (when a man entered the Swedish army he was issued a new surname). Because most Swedes had patronymic names (Andersson, Johansson, Larsson etc.) this was meant to avoid the confusion of having 10 Andersson's, 10 Larsson's etc. in the same unit. In this case, Johannes Danielsson entered the army and became Johannes Danielsson Bard.

Good luck in your search.
