I am only peripherally connected to the Barkleys. Eliza Jane Barkley was my grandfather's stepmother but I have been researching my family history, including her, and I thought Barkley researchers could use this information. According to the 1900 census, Eliza was born in Feb 1858. the 1860 census of Tippah gives her parents as Benjamin 35 and Mary 26 with sister Jennie 6 and brother Elijah 3 months. on May 18, 1873 Miss E.J. Barkley married James Welch in Tippah. I can not find her in the 1880 census so I don't know how many children she and James had. they had at least one daughter, known as "Tish", probably a nickname.James Welch died sometime in the late 1870s or early 1880s. This is where my grandfather's family comes into the story. William Isiah Aldridge of Tippah Co, son of John L. Aldridge 1834 Ala-1908 Prentiss Co Ms, grandson of John Aldridge 1786 Ga-Dec 1866 Tippah was married to Lillie Ann Bryant in 1886 in Tippah. they had two children--John Lewis Aldridge 1887-1975 my grandfather and Dora 1889-1984 Prentiss Co. Lillie died in childbirth with Dora in July 1889 and later that same year William Aldridge married the widowed Eliza Jane Welch, Oct I think. William and Eliza had two daughters, Mary and Laura. in 1897 William Aldridge was seriously injured while cutting wood and died of his injuries. my grandfather and his sister continued to live with Eliza Jane into the early 1900s. in 1904 J.L. Aldridge married and moved to Tupelo Ms. Dora married Walter William Garrett of tippah Co in 1908. Laura married Elrey H. Cagle in 1907, moved to Ark and died there in 1981. I do not know what became of Tish and Mary. in the 1910 census Liza Jane Aldridge is living with Wm. W. Garrett and Dora. she is gone by the 1920 census, presumably deceased. I have a copy of a photo of Eliza Jane Aldridge with her daughters Tish, Dora, Mary and Laura taken about 1905. she is a slim white haired woman. i hope this information will be useful to some Barkley researchers.
