I am the 6th great grandson of Jarick Shryock and Barbara Susanna Barlow. She was born in 1705 but I can only guess it was around Specthof, or Opplesbohm Germany since that is where Jarick was born. They married in 1725 and immigrated to Philadelphia Aug. 23, 1733 on the ship HOPE. This area in SW Germany is about 23 km NE of Stuttgart.
Can anyone place their Barlow ancestors in that part of the world in the late 1600's? Since several Barlows appear to have immigrated from Germany in the early 1700's, I suspect that relationship may have prompted the 7 Shryock immigrants to come to America in the 1730's.
Those were troubling times in Germany as the young men were being conscripted into the local armies. Families with assets did what they could to help their sons escape. They came over as free men and were not indentured. They signed their papers and oaths and some went into the printing business in Philadelphis (at the same time as Ben Franklin.)
If you are a German based Barlow, we may have a connection.
