My g-g-g-grandmother was Mary Ann Barman b.1816. My g-g-grandmother was Sarah Barman b.1840. Both are potential contemporaries and I am looking for a connection.
As people from my fathers generation die so the Barman name has gone from New Romney but there are plenty of relatives descended from female lines, consequently with different surnames.
Have you been to New Romney? If not there an interesting website tour of the village. I will try and find the address.
It is said that the Barmans in England are descended from a Noewegian sea captain who settled here. This is, as far as I know, as yet unproven. However, I have found Barmans going back a long way in Switzerland, some in Norway and one in the county of Norfolk on the east coast of England which could back this story up.
Will send more information as I compile it.
