I have done some more checking. Stephen Barman b. 1793 was the father of MARY ANN BARMAN !! B. 1816. She was the mother of Sarah Barman so she was the sister to James and Sarah WAS the the granddaughter of Stephen and neice to James (see my previous speculation).
So Mary Ann has Sarah, father unknown, in 1840 but did get married to John Quested in 1841-was he the father? Sarah then had George and Agnes Tunbridge Barman by George Tunbridge.
The earliest Barman I have so far is William Barman m. 1748.
The earliest Tunbridge I have is Nicholas Tunbridge d. c1540.
However my Aunt may know more. I will find out, but at the moment she is in Italy researching my paternal grandmothers family!
My father thinks we were connected with the Barmans of Woodchurch and remembers a butchers shop in Woodchurch owned by Barmans when he was a boy.
