BARNEBY (of Brockhampton), LUTLEY (of Enville) & SCLATER families
As a descendant of the Lutley of Enville family, I am researching their descendants.
From the marriage of Penelope Barneby, heiress of Brockhampton, in 1707, to Philip Lutley of Broncroft and Leighton Hall, Salop., the family divided into three main lines:- (1) The Lutley Sclater line (2) The Lutley Jordan line (3) The Lutley Barneby (or Barneby Lutley) line.
The Lutley Sclater line (1) has a wealth of published documentation. For the Lutley Jordan line (2), I have substantial private family records. However, published records for the Barneby Lutley line (3) seem to be very sparse and insufficient to figure out just who’s who.
The Lutley Barneby family history is intimately connected with a number of important estates and properties in the Bromyard, Herefordshire area.
I should like to obtain more information, dates and places of births, marriages and deaths, parentage issue and siblings, properties held, acquired and disposed of, career and personal details, etc. for the following individuals:-
(1) Penelope Barneby, dau. William Barneby (d.1719), heiress of Brockhampton, m. 1707, Philip Lutley of Broncroft and Leighton hall, Salop.
Her brother, John Barneby (1684-1726)
(2) Their youngest son, Bartholomew Richard Lutley (d.1783), who assumed the surname Barneby in 1735, m. 1756 Betty Freeman (d. 1708) of Gueries, Herefs., and who built Brockhampton House in the 1860s.
(3) Their children, John, Richard, and Thomas Barneby, who sold the properties in Shropshire inherited from their uncle Jinks (or Jenkes) Lutley in the late 1780s. I have no further details of their dates, spouses or issue, nor of how the estates were divided between them.
(4) William Barneby, of Clater Park and Saltmarsh Castle, m. Katherine Ann Sclater (1836-1922), his second cousin. They had four children. He is mentioned in Bromyard Trades Directory, 1876-7
(5) John Habington Barneby Lutley, (d.1906) of Brockhampton (and of Buckenhill Manor?) m.1864, Emily Margaret Chetwynd-Talbot (c 1844-1886)
(6) K. Mary Barneby, (living in1920), probably a daughter of Katherine Ann Sclater and William Barneby.
(7) Colonel John Talbot Lutley (d. 1946?) D.L., J.P. for Bromyard, who bequeathed the Brockhampton Estate to the National Trust in 1946, probably the son of John Habington Barneby Lutley and Emily Margaret Chetwynd-Talbot. (Pencil portrait by Brian Hatton 1887-1916 ),
The above are the only Lutley Barnebys (or Barnebys Lutleys) of whom I can find any records. Local history archives undoubtedly have more. More information on the Freemans of Gaines and the White House at Suckley, Worcs. could also be useful.
I possess Lutley genealogies from 12th c. to 21st c. for the Lutley Sclater and Lutley Jordan lines as well as the Barneby genealogy from the time of King Edward IV to the 17th c., should anyone be interested (probably mostly taken from Burke).
Thanks for any new info you can supply.
Michael Lutley Jordan
