Hi John,
I don't really have any answers for you, but I will give a few observations pro and con as to whether the two names could be from the same family.
Pro:
-A branch of the Barneycastle family of England apparently moved from Lincolnshire to Buckinghamshire sometime around 1612, so they were there at the same time as your Bonneycastles.
-I've seen one instance of the town Barnard Castle, which is called Barney Castle by the British, being called Bonny Castle, though it could be a typo.
-I'm pretty sure that "Bonney Castle" of Martin County was either Richard Barneycastle or one of his kids, as found in the 1840 Martin Co. NC census (male in census is appx 70 years old and I need to check original census to make sure "Bonney" is a male).
-I've seen William Bonneycastle mistakenly called Barrycastle, which is also a mistaken version of Barneycastle.
Con:
-Except for the Martin County census, I've never seen any Barneycastles called Bonneycastle, and I've seen tons of weird variations in my years of research.
-The Bonneycastle family seems to have been very prolific (especially on Buckinghamshire), and I saw an entry about a Sir Richard Bonneycastle, indicating nobility.I've never seen any Barneycastles referenced as of the gentry or noble class.
-I've never seen Bonneycastles intermingled with Barneycastles in any place, including records, cemetaries, court documents, etc.
It seems that one could make an argument either way because there just isn't much information out there about the early families of the 1600's.The early England Barneycastle info comes from LDS, and those dates and names are from actual parish records.
I did a search on google and was surprised at how the Bonneycastle families settled in both Canada and Virginia and were quite a presence in those places.I think I saw that a Bonneycastle settled in Newfoundland, which is interesting since a William Barneycastle was married there as well.
Do you have more info on the earliest Bonneycastles- names and dates?I did see one ancestry world tree entry for a John Bonney, who supposedly married a lady named Jane Castle and they suggest this is how the name came into being.I find this very hard to believe since in the 1600's patriarchal society (and centuries later) there was no such thing as using a wife's name, no matter what the circumstances.Men did marry wealthy women to gain lands and all that, but they never ever took the woman's name as far as I've read.
The name Barneycastle is derived from a place name, though where it comes from is not known. The most often suggested is the town of Barnard Castle, nicknamed Barney Castle. But other ideas include the area of Ireland called Barna Cashel, or even Blarney Castle.I looked up Bonn(e)y Castle just to check, and couldn't find a castle by that name, though there were tons of poetry and such calling a castle a "bonney castle".
Anyway, I'm interested in your thoughts on the matter.I really haven't searched into the Bonneycastle connection since I only just discovered the name a month ago by accident.
Maureen
