Who is the real William Barnhill?

Hello,

I have been going in circles trying to find my real 4th great grandfather, William Barnhill. According to my records he was born in York co. and was a slave as a child.
He supposedly married Nancy (or Ann) Packer and had the following children:
Susannah b. 1798 York co. Pa. married Thomas West
Phillip b. 18o7 Cuyahoga co. Ohio married Malinda Pierce
Nancy b. 1801 Cuyahoga co. Ohio married Solomon Day
William
Joseph
Elmer b.1810 Columbiana co.
Phillip, William and Elmer changed their surnames to Barnell, Barney and Packer respectively.

I have heard from other researchers that Susannah's real parents were a William Barnhill and Jane Johnston and that Susannah was actually born in North Carolina!

Records also indicate that "my" William Barnhill was a mulatto. Of Course that designation was also given to American Indians, not just African Americans.

This is making me crazy, not knowing how my real gggg-grandfather really was!

Any help would really be appreciated.

Many thanks
Sandra VanOrman
