Mary - Cathy Osborne (this forum) is one of my most trusted family researchers. She may be the person who has the best information concerning John Alexander Barnhill. John applied for and received military pension at age 74 in Henry County, Georgia. He is thought to have lived in Franklin County, Georgia for a period of time. Record states that he served in the North Carolina Militia. Pension started Dec. 24, 1833. Leonard Loren Barnhill, Barnhill researcher, called John the "North Carolina Barnhill". Also, please note James J. Barnhill was John's nephew, as attested by the will of Alexander Barnhill. See notes associated with James J. Barnhill (1772). The first mention of Georgetown [GA] was made in 1791, and at that time Augusta was the nearest market and city from which supplies were secured. There were no railroads and Georgetown's water-routed freight was quite a convenience to the farmers of Warren County, even though it had to be hauled miles in ox carts and mule-drawn wagons. A warehouse was located in Georgetown in which freight brought by pole boats up and down the Ogeechee River was stored, and the farmers would go with their wagons and convey these supplies to their respective homes. Records show that John Barnhill deeded to William Devereaux Lot No. 7 in the town of Georgetown, April 19, 1791. ~ Stan
