Do you think your grandmother's notes were from research or family history handed down from one generation to another?
Just bits of minutia to add to your information and following the numbers on your post.
1.My family history states that the child of John and Nancy Ann Biggers was Margaret - perhaps your family was closer to their family to use the nickname Maggie.I did find a Nancy A. "Barnett" in the 1880 census with a daughter named Maggie, age 8.She was located in Bullocks Creek, York County, South Carolina. It also says she has a daughter, Mary WHITE, age 16.I do not have a copy of the actual census to see if it is a transcription error - at some point, I will look for that.If it is actually Barrett, it would indicate that John died prior to 1880.I also have family information that Margaret married a Childers.
2.My information says that the children of Robert R. and Sarah Jane Barber were Sarah "Sallie" Margaret and Mary Jane.
3.My information shows William Anderson Barrett, b. October 15, 1845 married Elizabeth Ann Faires (the spelling varies on this name - I have also seen it spelled Faries, Faris, Farris - all in the same family) b. July 9, 1854.They had 13 children, the youngest was born in 1898.Two, Margaret Minnie and George F., did not have children.
4.The information that I have on Nancy Jane Barrett shows that she died single with typhoid fever.
5.The information that I had on your g. grandfather was that his nickname was Doc and no one knows where that came from and that your g. grandmother was Joann (pronounced withtwo syllables, Jo Ann).I do not have their birth dates and death dates and where they died. I have all the names of their children and their spouses names with the exception of John's wife and all I have is Bessie.
6.I did not know that Sarah McCarter had sons, Harvy and Irvin - where were they in the 1870 census? The 1870 census shows Robert and William, but not Harvy and Irvin.
I had found Sarah's first marriage:
From the York County GenWeb
Marriage Notices from the Yorkville Miscellany Newspaper
York County, South Carolina
Issue of August 9, 1860
On the 1st inst., by Wm. McGill, Esq., Mr. Robert A. Jackson, and Miss Sarah C. McCarter, all of this District.
There was a Robert A. Jackson killed in the Civil War -
From the York County GenWeb
Death Notices from the Yorkville Miscellany Newspaper
York County, South Carolina
Jackson, R.A.:In memory of Lt. R. A. Jackson, of Co. G., 18th Regt., S. C. V., who was killed at Petersburg, Va., July 14th, 1864…leaves a wife and one child.(Issue of September 14, 1864)
and 18th Infantry Company G
Roster:
Jackson, Robert Andrew, Private/Bvt 2nd Lt., KIA 7/14/1864 Petersburg VA
- which I feel was probably Sarah's first husband, but I have no proof.
7.According to my information Margart [sic]Isobel Barrett aka Margaret Ann Barrett married Meek McCarter; Mary Clementine Barrett married Andrew "Mack" McCarter; and Andrew Torrence Barrett b. August 6, 1875 married Emma Lee Carroll b. June 8, 1880 (abt 1908 according to the 1930 census.)
Yes, I am a descendant of David Torrence Barrett.
My mom remembers meeting your g grandfather "Uncle Doc" and his son, John, when she was a very small child. Was John the postmaster in Demorest?
All of my information originally came from the family.I have tried to back it up with other sources, either visits to graveyards or from census, but I haven't really done more than that.
