Lootman dit Barrois
Jean Baptiste Lootman (or Lhotman) dit Barrois married Marie Cardinal on April 24, 1702 at Lachine in Quebec. He was born in 1691 in Iope, New England and his parents were Willibord and Ann (Le Ber) Lootman dit Barrois.Willibrord went to Canada as Secretary Counsellor and General Agent of the Compagnie des Indies. He was a linguist and interpreter for the Portugese and I've heard the Lootman dit Barrois name is Dutch.
Jean Baptiste Barrois served as a royal notary in the Illinois and was buried on January 11, 1740 at Cahokia.
He and Marie Cardinal had 12 children.I have details on descendants of several of those children.
I have often seen later spellings of the Barrois name as Barrios.Where I grew up in southern California the term barrio was Spanish for ghetto.
The great name of Barrois would certainly not have been construed to its present spelling if only those ancestors of the 1700s had know how their name was being spelled by others.
At any rate, if you are a descendant of this family, I would be interested in exchanging information.
