Merrit -
We exchanged messages regarding our respective Barthel ancestors last August in the Ancestry forum, where I'd posted an identical query. We concluded that our two Gottlieb Barthels were probably different people. Mine was born in 1798 in Saxony-Anhalt. Yours was born a generation later and lived as an adult in Hesse. It's possible that your Gottlieb was a son of my Gottlieb, but I have no information to support that possibility.
