My ggrandparents came to the US in 1866. They were both from a town in Prussia called Hermeskeil. His name was Jacob Barthel and his wife was Elizabeth. Jacob died here in Pittsburgh in 1902 and Elizabeth also died here in Pittsburgh in 1921. Their death notices ask that copies also be printed in East St. Louis. They had seven children Joannes, Annie, John, Henry, Mary, Louis, and Lena. The name Barthel was changed to Bartell by the 1880 census then to Bartel by the 1900 census. My dad and his one sister added the second L to make Bartell whilhis brother and other sister left their name as Bartel. Somehow there is a connection since they requested that the death notices be also printed in the East St. Louis papers.
