Elizabeth Lupo/ Chandler, perhaps Elizabeth Bassano ??
I believe I may have stumbled on who Elizabeth Lupo, who was widowed, and then married John chandler in 1600`s Virginia, maiden name was!
I have been researching the connections between the various branches of my Anthony ancestors, who were in the Tudor London of the same time as the Bassano and Lupo families.
All three of these families were brought in to the court of Henry VIII, along with others, to serve as Goldsmiths, musicians and musical instrument builders.
One of my Anthony cousins had gone over to England in the 1990`s and had done a lot of original research, reading the original Latin records from the 1500-1600`s. she had noticed that these families, with others of the same background, were constantly intermarrying, and doing biz together, over a number of generations. The evidence is quite striking that all of these families were of Jewish ancestry, and were still practicing Jews in private, though outwardly Catholic/ Christian. My cousin read in some of the original docs on our Anthony family, references to "thanking God to live in Country with religious freedom", and how the members of our Anthony family were described as being "dark, or Eygeption" in appearance. I understand there is hot debate as if the Bassano family was of Jewish origin... ! Not a problem, I am convinced that most of these associated families were indeed converso Jewish in origin. My interest at the moment , is in tracking the connections between the families, and thus my ancestry, linking them together.
I had already seen where the Lupo and Bassano, and other families had inter married at least several times, and now I believe I have found our Elizabeth Lupo / Chandler to have been an Bassano.
I think that our Elizabeth was Elizabeth Bassano, born Jun 8, 1600, at St. Leonard Shoreditch parish, London. She died in 1634, place not named. So, the dates match our Elizabeth Lupo, as does the first name, and indeed the two families did intermarry, as both families played music together, and conducted other biz affairs together as well in London over a number of generations.
Anyone have more information on Elizabeth Bassano, to dis-qualify her, or to fill in more details ? The data I saw on her, showed Elizabeth Bassano with no place of death, nor mention of husbands, so thus no outwardly conflicting info in those regards from Elizabeth Lupo.
I am descended from Elizabeth`s second husband John Chandler.
One Very interesting historical note to add to the debate as to Jewish origins, is that the first Jewish Cemetery in Virginia, was located on a corner of the Land Grant that Elizabeth Lupo and her first Lupo husband had claimed. When My ancestor John Chandler married her, he became quite wealthy with the 350 plus aces that the Lupos had claimed. The Cemetery today spreads out past the original portion of the Lupo claim, but the connection is Very interesting. It makes me wonder if the Chandler family was also of Jewish ancestry, and perhaps still secretly Jewish in the 1600`s in Virginia!
