John: I am also a descendant of Benjamin Bassel. Some of the information available on the internet indicates that Benjamin Bassel's father was John Bessel. There was a John Bessel listed in US census living in Litchfield for that period. There were also a number of "Bissells" living in Litchfield for an extended period of time. Some of the Bissells appear in Windsor, Connecticut with their names spelled both Bessel and Bissell. After much searching, I am beginning to suspect that our ancestor may have been a descendant of Captain John Bissell, a very early settlor of Massachusetts, whose descendants are found in several Connecticut towns, including Litchfield. Unfortunately, the information available on the internet does not carry the Bissell family tree far enough to confirm this relationship. I believe there is a site with information allowing descendants through the male line of Bissells to submit DNA for verification of their relationship. I don't have the site ready-to-hand, but I think it is fairly easy to locate. Since you are descended from the male line, I am wondering if you would be interested in submitting DNA to the appropriate entity and letting me know if we are, in fact, Bissells. Kind regards, Jane Hardin
