BACKGROUND OF NAME BASTIEN
For all those researching a Bastien family:
Be aware that in many cases Bastien is a dit name in Quebec---that is, a nickname or alias derived from Sebastien, a given male name. In most cases the family name was something else originally and only came into the family to distinguish one branch which often descended from a male child named Sebastien.Such as the Vanasse family. The group in this family became Vanasse dit Bastien to distinguish them from cousins who were either plain Vanasse, or Vanasse dit Vertefeuille, or Vanasse dit Precour.Eventually, some of this family dropped the Vanasse altogether and became simply Bastien. But without knowing they were Vanasse originally it is difficult to trace Bastien back to the family founder in North America.
For those who are descended from Quebec families, I suggest looking at the series Our French Canadian Ancestors by Thomas Laforest. This series has many excellent articles to help the researcher, including (spread over a number of volumes) dit names and their variations. Tom also wrote an article "Origin of French Canadian Family Names" which was printed in Heritage Quest magazine #17. This article shows the meanings or derivation of a great many surnames.
