My Bate family line began with Dr. James Bate (1731-1779)a surgeon with the Royal Navy and who was in St. Mary's City, Md., by 1768 and where he married Susannah Bond.A genealogy done by my great-uncle, Dr. Alexander Bate of Louisville, Ky, notes that he was the brother of Sir Henry Bate-Dudley (also known as Parson Bate) and of Philippa Bate who married General Sir Alexander Leslie (the same of Revolutionary War fame). His father, I believe, was John Nathaniel Bate of, perhaps, Nottinghamshire.I've been unable to trace the family back further for lack of names.
The genealogy also states that Dr. Bate was a kinsman of Governor (and General) William Brimage Bate of Tennessee.Wm. Brimage Bate's line is filled with Humphrey Bates, going back to Humphrey Bate who married Sara Leggett (or Legate) in Bertie, NC in the early 1700s. One wonders just where, or if, the connection between our families lies.Tough, huh?
