I'm sorry if What I posted was confusing but at the present time, I have on hand four different Bates lines that traveled from various places in South Carolina to originally settle in the Fayette County area of Georgia. The very first family was John Isaac Bates from Lydd England who settled in what is now the Goochland County area and at least one of his descendents, William Bates with Wife Mary Barton Royall and several other family members, migrated to SC about 1780 to settle in the Pendletion District. His son, Royal Bates, migrated to Kentucky while several others migrated to Georgia during the second land lottery of 1830 and settled in the Fayette County area. The second major family line was Major General John C. Bates who is reputed to have resigned his commission over the treatment of the Creek Indians then moved to Georgia in 1832 also to the Fayette County area.We do no have any ancestry backward for him at this time. The third is the line that I am descended from of another John C. Bates who immigrated from England to South Carolina about 1800-1808, married Edna in South Carolina, then he also migrated to Georgia during one of the land lotteries to settle in the Fayette County area.My father, Grover Raymond Bates, remembers it being stated in this manner even though the listings presently on the internet show him being born in South Carolina. My Great Grandfather, James Thomas Bates migrated from Griffin, Ga area (Vaughn, Ga?) to Abbeville, Al to Blakely, Ga, to Dothan, Al, to Blakely, Ga again, where my father was born, and finally down to Altoona, Fl where they lived the remainder of their lives. The last line that I presently have is John Michael Bates, usually only listed as Michael Bates, who was of Germanic descent who came to SC as a young man, 9 year old, with his father George Bette, in 1752.Some of his descendants also migrated to the Fayette Co area during one of the land lotteries but settled in a different area than the others.I have not persued much research in this area as yet but think it was east of Fayette Co.Others of his descendents migrated into North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky also during this same time frame. There undoubtedly are others that came later into the Georgia/Alabama/Florida area as I have references of Bates' in Florida that I presently have no connections for.As you can see, I have not even started with the other Bates lines that begin in the Connetticut, New Jersey, New York, and Massachussetts area though we do have one of the original John Isaac Bates' relations, James and Clement that immigrated to Massachussetts in 1835.I also have not done any extensive reasearch in this area as well particularly after I found out my ancestor was a direct immigrant rather than being connected to the Virginia Bates.I realize this is rather long but hope it clears up the confusion I caused.Regards and che-ers
