Thank you for your response. John Herrington's family was in Georgia as early as 1799. Several of the kids (including John) were born in Baldwin County, Georgia. They were in Conecuh County, Alabama, by 1816 where John's last 2 siblings were born.
John and Phebe lived in Florida from their marriage in 1820 until around 1830 when they moved to Alabama. They only stayed a few years there because by 1836 they were in Kemper County, Mississippi. They appear in the 1840 and 1850 census counts in Kemper County but in the 1860 census they were in Neshoba County, along with several of their married children as well as their 2 youngest who were still living with them.
John Herrington was the first pastor of the Pine Grove Baptist Church which is still an active church in Neshoba County. Phebe and some of their married children were also instrumental in founding the church. Several other church members had ties to the Herrington group through marriages and a good number of them are buried in the church cemetery.
John died in 1874 in Neshoba County. Phebe died in 1888 in Kemper County. We don't know why she was in Kemper County because, as far as we can tell, none of her children were living there at that time.
Our only clues about Phebe have to do with the names of some of her sons. These names had not appeared in our Herrington clan until that time. The names are Anderson, Right/Wright, Joseph, and Robert. The names Anderson and Right/Wright are the most unique. Were either of these used by your Bates?
If you can give me a suggestion about where to look, I would appreciate it. I have toyed with the idea of Native American connections or even with a connection to Bloody Bill Bates as an explanation to the total absence of information about Phebe. My mother and one of her sisters did extensive research for about 40 years, but were never able to find her. I've been looking for about 10 years and have't added anything either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
